Kabarnet University College secures accreditation for three new degree programmes

Kabarnet University College has achieved a major milestone after the Commission for University Education (CUE) accredited three new academic programmes following a follow-up accreditation and institutional inspection visit. The newly accredited programmes are Bachelor of Science in Travel and Tours Management, Bachelor of Education (Science) and Bachelor of Science with majors in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry, marking a significant expansion of the College’s academic offerings.

The inspection was conducted as part of CUE’s ongoing regulatory oversight of universities and university colleges in Kenya. Its main purpose was to assess for Kabarnet University College’s progress since its establishment and gazettement under The Universities (Kabarnet University College) Order, 2025. The team examined milestones in infrastructure, academic programme delivery, governance structures, human resources and institutional arrangements, while also reviewing the College’s readiness for the next stage of its development pathway.

A milestone in Kabarnet University’s institutional journey

The accreditation of the three new degree programmes was the highlight of the visit and represents a significant achievement in Kabarnet University College’s institutional journey. The new programmes broaden academic opportunities for prospective students while responding to the growing demand for skilled professionals in science, education and the tourism sector.

The Bachelor of Science in Travel and Tours Management is expected to produce graduates equipped with the knowledge and practical skills required to support Kenya’s vibrant tourism and hospitality industry. The Bachelor of Education (Science) will contribute to the preparation of qualified science teachers, supporting national efforts to strengthen science education in schools. Meanwhile, the Bachelor of Science with majors in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry will provide students with a strong scientific foundation and prepare graduates for careers in research, industry, education and other science-related fields.

The accreditation reflects the Commission’s confidence in the College’s academic capacity and readiness to deliver quality programmes that meet national and global standards

The CUE visit was a significant milestone for Kabarnet University College, established as the first public university in Baringo County. Since its inception, for Kabarnet University College has worked closely with Moi University and other stakeholders to align its governance, academic structures and quality assurance mechanisms with national standards.

Institutional presentation and self-evaluation

Kabarnet University College’s leadership and management teams presented a comprehensive self-evaluation report that traced the College’s achievements, challenges and action plans. The presentation covered developments in academic programmes and curriculum design, governance structures and decision-making processes, and infrastructure including lecture halls, laboratories and administrative offices.

The report also addressed student enrolment trends and admission processes as well as research, innovation, and community engagement initiatives. It conveyed a clear commitment to continuous improvement and alignment with CUE’s quality assurance standards.

The CUE inspection team carried out a detailed site visit to confirm the College’s physical and operational capacities. Areas inspected included academic and administrative offices, teaching and learning facilities, ICT infrastructure and digital learning resources, student welfare and support services and safety, security and environmental arrangements on campus.

The team interacted with staff, students, and support personnel to gain first-hand insights into daily operations and the institutional culture that has emerged at Kabarnet University College. These interactions helped contextualise the documentary evidence and clarified how systems function in practice.

The inspection concluded with an exit meeting in which the CUE team shared preliminary observations and recommendations. Overall, the team acknowledged the College’s strong commitment to quality assurance and regulatory compliance, positive progress in governance, staffing, and early programme delivery and a clear strategic direction supported by sound institutional planning.

Recommendations focused on strengthening academic staffing and qualification benchmarks, curriculum review and documentation processes, research and innovation frameworks, student support and welfare mechanisms, and institutional data management and reporting systems. KUC welcomed the recommendations and pledged to implement the necessary improvements in a timely manner, in line with CUE’s expectations and national higher education standards.

The new programmes will expand learning opportunities for students, strengthen the College’s contribution to the development of skilled human capital and support national priorities in science, education and tourism. They also reinforce the institution’s vision of becoming a centre of excellence in teaching, research, innovation and community engagement.

As Kabarnet University College continues to build on the foundations laid since its establishment, it remains focused on strengthening academic programmes, infrastructure, governance and student support systems, with the aim of meeting and sustaining the high standards expected of public universities in Kenya.
